Resiliencia en Lienzo
Museo Casa Escuté, Carolina, Puerto Rico
May 15th, 2019
"Resiliencia en Lienzo" (Resilience on Canvas) at Casa Museo Escuté, a historic house museum in Carolina, Puerto Rico, from February 15th to May 2019, featured 33 artworks by Fernando Bonnin.
These works collectively convey the theme of resilience. As Bonin explores it, resilience is the ability to withstand adversity or recover from it quickly and a profound journey of self-discovery and growth. As an example of this, in September 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by two major hurricanes ten days apart. Developing resilience became a source of creative and hopeful reflection, but ¿ where does the resilience take that power? This is explored through three themes (mentioned by the Puerto Rican newspaper "El Vocero" covering the exhibition): resilience takes its power from the constant connection with the beauty of the Island and the power to enrich the spirit of traveling, all shared by Bonnin in each artwork.
He celebrates elements found in Puerto Rico, such as the vibrant Caribbean light and the sea, as the backdrop for elegant sailboats. These elements, deeply rooted in Puerto Rican culture, inspire Bonin's work and foster a sense of connection with the audience. Resilience, which remains relevant even after this exhibition, was also applicable in 2020 when the world confronted a worldwide pandemic.
